We have been exploring pretend play lately and what better, more real experience to tap into than a day out shopping. The conversations overheard today were priceless. Most children slipped seamlessly into the roll of mommy, cashier, stock boy or shopper.
"I'm bringing the baby shopping."
"Here's some eggs."
"I need to pay."
"Do you want pizza?"
"I am the checker girl."
"I will make you pay then you take the food home and cook it for me."
"Ok, I'm the buyer."
"Ahh, you have to pay $3."
"Hey, your baby is crying. Buy her some juice."
"Want me to buy that for you sweetie?"
"Hello, here's my money. I'm buying this stuff."
"I wonder what I should cook for dinner tonight. Honey, what do you want?"
I had to giggle to myself at how seriously some of the above lines were delivered. They all had such a great time shopping today. We also had time to squeeze in some art. We painted on shopping bags and clipped coupons.
