"This worm is alive!"
"There's a worm in my tummy!"
"These snacks look like worms."
"Worms taste great!"
Who knew you could walk right into Walmart and buy night crawlers? Well that is just what I did yesterday. The woman behind the counter wondered what I needed them for. I just told her my boys were going to love them. They were a big hit today. We even had children from other classes come visit and check them out. The boys were engaged in a variety of "wormy" adventures today. At snack time, the boys enjoyed some Veggie Straws. It wasn't long before someone decided they looked like worms and began asking for "more worms, please". Once that caught on the conversation included comments like: "This worm is alive!" "There's a worm in my tummy!" "These snacks look like worms." "Worms taste great!" In keeping with the theme of the week our sensory tub was full of "worms" too. The boys had a blast grabbing and squeezing the "worms". They loved the feel of the wet pasta running through their fingers. We spent some time talking about worms and how their bodies are different from ours. The children were very interested in how worms moved. We discussed how their bodies are segmented and they use their muscles to contract and expand their bodies. This was evident as the boys picked up the live worms and watched them crawl around. We did a simple science experiment to demonstrate just how their segments expand. We used paper wrapped straws and pushed the wrappers all the way down the straw as tight as we could and took the straw out. Then we used droppers to add a few drops of water and watch the wrappers expand and appear to inch forward. Just like a worm! And really what is a day all about worms with out WORMS!
Viva Fiesta! Our preschool Fiesta celebration kicked of with an amazing float parade. The children we encouraged to decorate a shoe box float with a theme that interested them. We saw some pretty amazing floats with themes ranging from "Frozen" and "Superheros" to "My Little Pony" and "Legos". All were outstanding and so much fun to see glide by. Our festivities did not end with the parade. We continued the day with a wide variety of fun filled events. First stop... The Pinatas. Next, we headed over to the cake walk. What a delicious treat! The boys were able to decorate their own cupcake or muffin. One of our favorite activities of the morning was the Cascarones. Next stop... making maracas! We were all getting pretty hungry so we headed to the next room to make our own tortillas from scratch. We rolled our own dough and after they were cooked we enjoyed a fresh, warm snack. We finished up our activities with some face painting. What fun! Our celebration was topped off with a delicious traditional Fiesta meal. I wish I had pictures of it but for one we were so hungry we dove right in and second my battery died and I could not take any more pictures.
It was an amazing and busy day and a huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that decorated, ran activities, donated materials, cooked, cleaned and shared in our parade. You certainly made it a special day for the children! VIVA FIESTA!!!! What a perfect day for a party! A huge thank you goes out to the Hochart's for hosting a fun filled morning. Everything was perfect and the children and I had a wonderful time. This morning the boys enjoyed more hands on spring time fun. The highlight being our Easter Egg dying at the end of the morning. The boys were very excited to dye their eggs. Each child had the opportunity to mix their water, vinegar and color tablets. We each had four eggs to dye and choosing which color we would use was a lot of fun. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our Easter Party on Wednesday. Don't forget to bring a dozen filled plastic eggs with your son's name on them, a basket and camera! See you then!
Today was all about eggs! The boys enjoyed exploring my Easter Egg collection, painting with plastic eggs, hiding eggs in play- dough, and putting eggs together in the sensory tub. The funniest little conversation took place just before pick up when several of the boys found my egg collection again. Before I knew it they were making a nest out of the circles we sit on and pretending to be birds. They had decided they were "dodo birds" and were sitting on their eggs so they would hatch. This was accompanied by a lot of chirping and clucking. Oh, how I love these boys and their growing imaginations!
What an exciting day! The boys got to experience lady bugs up close and personal. I went to the Garden Center on Bandera yesterday and picked up a container of Ladybugs to bring in for the Owls. This little container housed 1500 ladybugs! We read a few books about ladybugs and then decided to release them into the garden just outside our classroom. After playing with the ladybugs we had a little fun on the playground. It was such a beautiful day!
What an exciting morning exploring several different types of insects. The boys were really interested in getting an up close look and the many specimens that were available. We counted their legs, looked to see if they had wings, and examined them with our magnifying glasses. The boys were able to indulge their naturally curious minds and hands. They asked questions and looked through books wondering which insects were friendly and which might hurt us. We sorted bugs and some of us tried to build our own unique insects. Before the boys arrived this morning I went outside and found a few roly poly bugs for us to observe. Watching them climb, flip over and right themselves was a lot of fun. After a discussion of how we should treat God's creatures many of the boys were brave enough to allow a roly poly walk on their hands. They were quite amused at the way the bug tickled their hands as it walked along. We decided we wanted to go outside for a roly poly hunt. Armed with a small bug jar, we searched for leaves and roly poly bugs to take home and share with our families. We turned over rocks and also found slugs and snails. Aren't you glad we decided to only take a roly poly home? Friday we will be exploring another friendly insect, ladybugs.

Why Blog? Here you will find little snippets of our days together. When my children were in preschool and would come home I would always ask, "So, what did you do today?". All they ever said was, "Played." That didn't tell me much. I hope this blog will be a place to share what we have done and help you ask more directed questions of your child. You will see first hand just what we do after you kiss your little one goodbye in the morning. It will also be a great place to visit and see just how much your child has grown and learned throughout the year. Archives
