It was a beautiful day to celebrate WHEELS! The boys truly enjoyed riding in circles and testing out each other's rides. I think many of them could have kept on going if time allowed. Before we met our parents for a picnic we had fun in class too. We worked on a stop light project, made bracelets, listened to stories and of course enjoyed the trains. The excitement level built all morning and by the time we headed out for our picnic the boys were bursting with energy. And then came the bikes in a variety of sizes and styles. These boys can motor! We even enjoyed the car wash. A very special thank you to all the family members that were able to join our special day. The boys and I had a wonderful time. I hope you enjoyed watching the joy on their faces as they whizzed by.
Today we had a very special visit from the San Antonio Police Department. The boys enjoyed the puppet show the police put on for us. We learned several important lessons. Officer McGruff taught us about stranger danger. He told us that if a stranger wants us to go with them we should say, "No, No, No!" Even if the stranger promises us candy, a toy or to visit with a puppy, we should say, "No, No, No!" He also said we should learn the name of the street we live on and the first names of our parents. The puppets also taught us to call 911 if we need help from the police or fire department. It was a great show and each child walked away with a police shield sticker. Back in the classroom we learned more about trucks and the types of jobs different trucks can do. Of course the trains were still out and continued to be a big hit! The boys and I are really looking forward to our Wheels Day celebration Friday. They can't wait to ride their bikes together and maybe even have a little car wash. We will meet you out under the portico at the entrance to the church at 11:45 for a picnic lunch and some free wheeling fun! See you Friday!
We continued our unit on transportation today. The boys continued to enjoy the trains but we were able to explore a few other activities today as well. The sensory tub was a big hit. We were so busy with the trains on Wednesday we never even opened it up. The boys had the opportunity to work together on a transportation mural this morning. Most passed it by but it grabbed the attention of one of the boys who chose to color every vehicle on the paper. The boys have also been enjoying the variety of books out this week. It was sweet to catch a few sharing at books and getting more and more excited with each turn of the page. And then we were off to the races! I set up several ramps around the room and handed the boys a box of matchbox cars and let them explore. Which ramps allowed the car to go the furthest? The fastest? The slowest? Did the type of car matter? They had a great time exploring! The boys and I are looking forward to next week. We will have a visit from a police officer and a puppet show on Wednesday as well as our Wheels Day Picnic and Ride Along. We'll be meeting on Friday, at 11:45 out side the sanctuary under the portico to lunch together and ride bikes or what ever ride along toy you wish to bring. Should be a lot of fun!
It was so good to be back with the boys today. Over the next two weeks we will be learning about transportation. With a class full of boys I am not sure two weeks will be enough! We began with trains. I must tell you I had quite a bit planned for us to do and I got none of it accomplished. As soon as I brought out the wooden train set the boys were mesmerized! It was hard to miss their enthusiasm. After reading, Terrific Trains, by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker, the boys could not contain there excitement for Thomas to arrive. We discussed a few ground rules about sharing, taking turns and keeping the trains on the tracks and not all over the room. Then I helped them assemble the tracks into a pretty big "train city". I knew the trains would be a hit. I just had no idea how big a hit. After they played for 30 minutes I asked who wanted to paint and the answer I got was, "Not me, I'm fine playing trains." To anyone walking by it simply looked like seven boys playing trains but there was a lot of learning going on. The boys were engaged in...
Some of the conversations overheard today... "The train is coming! Watch out!" "Choo, choo!" "Look out, I'm gonna crash!" "Beep, beep, I have to go through the tunnel." "Oh no, the bridge is up!" "Oh, he fell in the water!" "Someone else is coming up up the bridge." "I switched trucks." "I had a breakdown." "I dropped off my load at the station." "Thank you sir, for letting me pass." "I will trade you this one and this one." Maybe Friday we will get to some other activities!
We were missing a few Owl's today so it was pretty quiet. We continued to enjoy our dramatic play time. The boys also had a lot of fun painting on brown paper bags, dancing a bit and making our own fruit smoothies. Smoothie time! We cut our own strawberries, added ice and vanilla yogurt and blended. Delicious! I hope you all have a save and fun filled Spring Break! See you on the 19th!
Dramatic play was alive and well in our classroom today! The boys had a fantastic time pretending they were at the grocery store all morning. This play provided them with many different roles to explore. Some were shoppers, others check out clerks, and a few helped restock shelves. Listening to them work together, share materials and switch roles was very entertaining. Here is a little peek into our day. Welcome to HEB! The boys had so much fun taking turns as the check out clerk. They loved the "power" of the scanner and being behind the register. "BEEP, BEEP!" When the doors to HEB opened there was a mad dash to get as many items into the cart or basket as one could. You would have thought it was the day before Thanksgiving if you were watching. Over time the rush to explore subsided and some great imaginary play began to develop. Over heard during play today... "I like corn." "I need a grocery basket." "Whoa, I sure have a lot of groceries!" "Look, I got a great sale!" "I am buying this for a special dinner tonight." "I'm stacking it up. I hope it doesn't fall." "Here, Milk! I'm buying that for the baby." "I like the register. You put coins in it." "Ok, That's $14." "Can I be the check out boy now?" "Sure, I'll go shop." At one point, one of the shoppers decided he needed to use the cart because he was the daddy bringing his baby to shop for a special treat. I love watching them role play! Aside from shopping til we dropped we also sorted fruits, clipped coupons and did a science experiment to watch raisins dance in tonic. It was a very busy day! |
Why Blog? Here you will find little snippets of our days together. When my children were in preschool and would come home I would always ask, "So, what did you do today?". All they ever said was, "Played." That didn't tell me much. I hope this blog will be a place to share what we have done and help you ask more directed questions of your child. You will see first hand just what we do after you kiss your little one goodbye in the morning. It will also be a great place to visit and see just how much your child has grown and learned throughout the year. Archives
