We spent time working on letter recognition, counting leaves, making our own butter and stringing wooden beaded necklaces.
We were a small group today! Only half our our classmates were in today. I hope the other Owls are feeling better soon because they were missed. We spent time working on letter recognition, counting leaves, making our own butter and stringing wooden beaded necklaces. The children also had the opportunity to use a plastic knife to spread their own cheese on crackers for snack as well as to spread their own butter (which we made together) on a slice of bread. It is very empowering for the children at this age to be trusted with a knife and to prepare their own snack. They enjoyed the challenge. We strung beads today with great success and interest. With so few kiddos present it was the perfect time to bring out the best toy EVER! A GIANT BOX! The rest of the morning was spent coloring, climbing in and out, and engaging in pretend play. The box magically became a fire truck, rocket ship, car, and dog house. What great imaginary play, story telling, sharing and cooperation a simple box can bring to a group of children.
For the third straight Friday we were stuck indoors due to the rain. But we managed to make the best of it. We continued to work on our shape recognition. The children had the opportunity to make shapes in shaving cream and even build shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows. We read It Looked Like Spilled Milk and the children tried to make their own cloud shape. We made a rabbit, butterfly and even a unicorn! Next came some fun shape formation. We built shapes out of marshmallows and tooth picks. Well let's be honest. The kids ate more marshmallows than they built with but we enjoyed the exercise. We also had a sensory experience where we played in shaving cream and had fun trying to create shapes in the foam.
The children were very excited to see we had a light table in the room today. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow it from another teacher for the week. Light tables add another sensory element to play. Ordinary transparent or translucent objects become much more interesting when brought to life on the light table. We worked with Magformers (found at Target and Amazon) which were a huge hit! These magnetic blocks are translucent, strong and wonderful for little hands. You can get really creative with them. They were a wonderful hands on way to introduce shapes. We also painted with shapes, made shapes and lines in the sand, worked with tangrams, sorted shapes and made some unique transient art with circles. Magformers and the window blocks were the most appealing to these little learners. Miss Heidi came in for a quick visit today and brought a turtle that washed up on her driveway during the big rains last week. She wanted to share it with the children before relocating it to a pond. Always fun to have a surprise guest!

Why Blog? Here you will find little snippets of our days together. When my children were in preschool and would come home I would always ask, "So, what did you do today?". All they ever said was, "Played." That didn't tell me much. I hope this blog will be a place to share what we have done and help you ask more directed questions of your child. You will see first hand just what we do after you kiss your little one goodbye in the morning. It will also be a great place to visit and see just how much your child has grown and learned throughout the year. Archives
