This morning the children enjoyed learning and experimenting with magnets. Tootsie brought us several special magnetic activities to try. We were amazed at how the magnets were only attracted to each other on one side but when we turned the magnet around it actually pushed the other magnet away. Some even thought it was like magic. We could move magnets without even touching them. We also discovered the magnetic force could pass through other objects like paper or a tray. Magnets with opposite colors attract one another and stick together. Magnets with like colors repel each other no matter how hard we try to force them together. The children could really feel this force. Each of us got a chance to try it out. We had a great time making the magnets dance or bounce. The like colored poles repelled and bounced away from each other, while the opposite colored poles were attracted to one another. This was a pretty awesome discovery that every one wanted to try. The final challenge Tootsie brought us was to see if we could move a magnetic ladybug through a maze without touching it with our hands. We quickly discovered that if we put the magnetic wand over the ladybug it would jump onto the wand and we couldn't move it through the maze. So we tried using the wand under the maze and sure enough, success! We were able to show that the magnetic force was strong enough to move the magnet through the tray without touching the magnet itself. Once we had that understanding we decided to paint using magnets. We drizzled some paint on our paper and placed the paper in a tray. Then we added some magnetic marbles. We stood and placed a giant magnet under the tray and watched the magnetic marbles as we moved the magnet below. At times it looked like the magnets were dancing. Our dramatic play area was transformed into a lemonade stand this week. We had a great time serving our friends. We also had several opportunities to work on our fine motor skills. We built with snap blocks, tried a decorative hole punch, and watered the plants in the garden. It was certainly a day of discovery. Looking forward to Friday when we will test to see if the magnetic force will work though water.

Why Blog? Here you will find little snippets of our days together. When my children were in preschool and would come home I would always ask, "So, what did you do today?". All they ever said was, "Played." That didn't tell me much. I hope this blog will be a place to share what we have done and help you ask more directed questions of your child. You will see first hand just what we do after you kiss your little one goodbye in the morning. It will also be a great place to visit and see just how much your child has grown and learned throughout the year. Archives
